About

Tabla Artist Sutanu Sur, sharing a demonstration of the Tabla at the preconcert talk.

Sutanu Sur

Sutanu Sur is an internationally acclaimed Tabla artist, Indian-Western crossover musician, and educator based in the Midwest. He is the owner and founder of Sur Academy of Music and Arts, dedicated to promoting Indian Classical Music in the West through unique collaborations, education, and workshops. Born into a music-loving family in the suburbs of Kolkata, India, Sutanu was drawn to rhythm at the age of five. His uncle, the late Shantimoy Sur (affectionately known as Chanu da), a vocalist, Tabla player, and respected music critic, significantly influenced his early musical development. Sutanu began formal Tabla training under the tutelage of the late Pt. Sukumar Maitra, following the traditional Guru-Shishya system for 12 years. He later continued his advanced studies with the legendary Pt. Swapan Chaudhuri.

Sutanu recognizes the profound connection between the rhythmic intricacies of Tabla and the development of mathematical and analytical skills. This understanding led him to pursue a degree in Information Technology from Jadavpur University, one of India's leading science and technology universities. In 2012, he moved to the US to work as a software engineer, while continuing to perform, educate, and promote his music through various concerts and workshops. He has captivated audiences with the Tabla, an instrument relatively unfamiliar in the West, through both solo performances and innovative collaborations.

Sutanu's versatility shines through his work with diverse ensembles and artists. He has performed with Western orchestras, including a featured performance with the Fox Valley Symphony Orchestra at the opening night concert of their 2022-23 season, which won the prestigious American Prize 2023 for Orchestral Performance (Professional Division). He has explored the intersection of Indian classical music with the Western Classical Orchestra and Choir through unique compositions featuring the Tabla. He has been invited as a featured guest artist by renowned organizations and festivals like the Fox Valley Symphony Orchestra, Lawrence University, GreenLake festival of music, IndUS of Fox Valley, Fox Valley Performing Arts Center, Atlanta Master Chorale, Consulate General of India (Chicago), WHBY Radio, Wisconsin Public Radio (WPR), Music Institute of Chicago, NewVoices Choir, Grinnell College (Iowa).

As a founder of Sur Academy of Music and Arts, Sutanu has been instrumental in providing students an opportunity to learn the Tabla. He also creates platform for students and established artists to collaborate and showcase the richness of Indian classical music. These presentations often feature unique thematic explorations and ensemble performances.

While making a significant mark on the Midwest music scene, Sutanu continues to expand his artistic horizons, exploring new avenues for collaboration and sharing the beauty and complexity of Tabla with audiences worldwide.
